The British Geological Survey (BGS) Coasts and Estuaries team is creating a database of coastline position for the whole length of Great Britain (GB) coastlines over the period between 1984 to 2022 (38 years). The OCRE EO Service Funding Research enabled them to join forces with ARGANS Ltd., a leading service provider in a fast-developing market of EO as a service, to produce a database that covers the entire Great Britain.

Aortic disease is a leading killer worldwide, and despite perceived progress in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques the burden from aortic disease is growing. Machine learning techniques have been used to successfully increase accuracy and reduce the time taken to diagnose the condition. Understanding the quantum properties of these new super thin materials with promising applications in electronics, healthcare, and new energy materials requires advanced scientific facilities and techniques. Thanks to commercial cloud resources procured via OCRE project adoption funding, researchers at Univerzitet Singidunum in Serbia (in collaboration with Univesidade Lusófona, Portugal) are developing algorithmic solutions for autonomous swarms of drones, enabling them to safely perform complex tasks in unknown environments using on-board sensors and inter-drone communication. Researchers are the University of Malta are currently trying to answer how much governments are able to control behaviour and encourage pro-social behaviours, such as handwashing, during the pandemic. And consequently, how much behaviour is determined by emotional wellbeing and personality. A new success story showcasing the adoption and use of commercial cloud solutions has been published by the OCRE project. The adopter is Leiden University who was facing critical computational challenges in analysing terabytes of housing platform data to better understand search behaviour of potential house buyers. The computational challenges and storage issues have been overcome by using the Google Cloud Platform and more precisely cloud services related to storage and advanced analytics; that is, Google Cloud Storage (IaaS) and Google BigQuery (SaaS).
