Nordic clouds are happening
The NORDUnet conference is the Nordic networking meeting place. It brings together the networking community from Nordic universities and NRENs and connects the Nordic, European and global networking communities. In this year’s conference, in Helsinki, one session was devoted to Nordic Clouds, with presentations on Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish and Nordic cloud initiatives and services.
Hybrid cloud infrastructure for Norwegian higher education
The Norwegian HE cloud initiative, coordinated by UNINETT, is aiming to provide a hybrid infrastructure platform, consisting of:
- A private HE cloud, based on OpenStack
- A community cloud, based on a commercial solution from IPnett (also OpenStack)
- One or more commercial public cloud solutions, based on the GÉANT IaaS tender results
The goal is to offer these solutions in a more or less seamless manner, both as pure infrastructure services, and as a platform for development and delivery of application services. None of the IaaS platforms are in production yet, but there will be significant progress within the next six months.
SNIC Science Cloud
The Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) is using OpenStack to build a national cloud infrastructure with the existing hardware in three of their HPC centers. The project has been active since February 2015, and aims to offer a platform for:
- Running existing services
- Application development
- Help the researchers into the cloud
The infrastructure is still not production ready, but approximately 60 pilot projects are currently running on it. The project aims to expand the offering with federated login and more services, platforms and datasets.
Scientific applications on an OpenStack cloud
High Energy Physics researchers are running scientific applications on the cPouta CSC cloud resource in Kajaani, Finland, through on an OpenStack based infrastructure. Other applications like Systems Biology or Condensed Matter Physics can also use this infrastructure.
Glenna: The Nordic Cloud Project
The Glenna Nordic Cloud project is coordinated by the Nordic e-Infrastructure Collaboration (NeIC). The goal of the project is to share knowledge and set best practices on managing cloud services and to create a Nordic federated cloud service, driven by the need of the Nordic researchers. The project has so far been looking into existing and coming platforms and services in the Nordic countries.
