Real-time online communications tools are crucial to research and education. Students, researchers and institute staff rely on e-learning services, distance or remote applications and audio and videoconferencing to collaborate, learn and share. Real-time communication enables to exchange multimedia and audio content in real time, including the integration of gateways to telephony networks using the (VoIP) SIP protocol. Some of GÉANT’s initiatives in this area include eduCONF, a toolset for an effective pan-European videoconference infrastructure, including tools for locating, validating and certifying rooms, managing and monitoring a videoconferencing network, eduOER, a service that supports access to multimedia content across multiple repositories, and the Rendez-Vous WebRTC solution and the GÉANT Web Conferencing framework.
